iPhone 15 Bluetooth Not Working: Pairing Fixes

iPhone 15 Bluetooth not working rarely means the Bluetooth itself has died. Far more often the fault sits with the accessory, a stale pairing record, interference or a setting — occasionally, after a drop or liquid, with the hardware itself. Apple publishes no Bluetooth repair price: a convicted hardware fault falls into its $549 “other damage” category, or $99 with AppleCare+. This guide works the accessory-first ladder in order.

ϟ Quick Expert Summary

Start with the master split: does Bluetooth fail with one accessory or with everything? One failing accessory — a headset, the car, one speaker — is that accessory or its pairing record until proven otherwise; everything failing points at the phone’s settings or software. Then work the ladder: check the accessory, clear the pairing on both sides, test at arm’s length, toggle Bluetooth, restart both devices, update iOS — and only last, Reset Network Settings, which also clears every pairing and saved Wi-Fi network. A greyed-out toggle ends the ladder.

✓ Keep Troubleshooting When

  • Only one accessory fails; others connect
  • The accessory also misbehaves with another phone
  • Dropouts happen at range or through walls
  • A restart, re-pair or update has not been tried yet

× Suspect Hardware When

  • The Bluetooth switch is greyed out and won’t turn on
  • Every accessory fails, even next to the phone
  • Nothing pairs at arm’s length after a reset
  • Failure began after a drop or liquid exposure

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis

Practical diagnosis based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.

Step one: the master split — one accessory, or everything?

Every Bluetooth problem has two suspects, and one test separates them: pair your phone with a second accessory you know works, and the failing accessory with a different phone. If the accessory fails everywhere, the phone is innocent; if your phone drops everything, the fault is phone-side. Do not skip this split — most “broken Bluetooth” stories end here.

Step two: read the symptom precisely — including the audio-route hijack

Different symptoms point at different rungs. Won’t pair at all usually means a stale record or an accessory not in pairing mode. Pairs but drops points at range, interference or a dying accessory battery. Connects but no audio is often not a connection fault at all: the audio may be routing to a connected device in another room while the phone sits silent in your hand. During a call or playback, open the audio output selector and check where the sound is going; if it is headed elsewhere, the phone is fine. Choppy audio is the interference signature, below. Bluetooth greyed out is a different class — held for the hardware section.

Step three: the accessory-side rungs

Charge and test the accessory itself first: a flat earbuds case or a dead headset is the commonest cause — a flat accessory cannot pair at all, and a dying battery mimics phone faults. Check whether it is still connected to a second device: many accessories hold two connections and sit on the other one — a laptop or another phone — refusing yours until that link is dropped; earbuds happily connected to a laptop in the next room are the classic case. Check it is actually in pairing mode, not just switched on, and not at its pairing-list limit; follow the maker’s reset steps. Also install any accessory firmware update or companion-app update its maker offers — pairing faults are often fixed there. One that fails on two phones has told you everything: reset or replace it.

Step four: clear the pairing record — on both sides

Pairings go stale: each side keeps a record of the other, and when those records no longer match, connections fail exactly like hardware faults — the classic “it worked yesterday”. A one-sided fix leaves the corrupted half in place, so clear both. In Settings → Bluetooth, tap the accessory and choose Forget This Device; then reset the accessory’s own pairing per its maker’s instructions, and pair again as if both were new. Cars get the same treatment on both sides, then pair fresh. One car cross-check helps: test wired CarPlay by cable over the USB-C port (USB 2 — wired CarPlay still applies); working wired but not wirelessly means a Bluetooth or pairing problem.

Step five: range and interference — the honest explanation

Bluetooth is short-range by design, and published ranges are “up to” figures — roughly a room, not a house, and walls and distance cut them hard — so test at arm’s length in the open before convicting anything. Walls, your own body, and crowded 2.4GHz environments genuinely disrupt it: busy Wi-Fi and microwave ovens crowd that space, and audio stutters first. Metal cases and magnetic mounts can shorten range too. If dropouts happen in one place only, suspect the place: move into the open, take the case off, and retest. Solid at arm’s length but choppy across two rooms is behaving as designed, not failing.

Step six: the phone-side ladder

Toggle Bluetooth properly, in Settings → Bluetooth — not Control Centre, where the button only disconnects current accessories until tomorrow while Bluetooth stays on, so that “toggle” never happened. Switch it off, wait ten seconds, back on. Toggle Airplane Mode to restart the radios. Restart both devices — phone and accessory: earbuds back in their case, the speaker or car system fully off and on. Install any pending iOS update (Settings → General → Software Update). If the phone is unresponsive, force restart: quick-press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Step seven: Reset Network Settings — last, with its real cost stated

Leave this until the gentler rungs have failed. This reset rebuilds the list in one stroke — and it is scorched earth: it also clears Bluetooth pairings and saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, plus cellular and VPN/APN settings. Every accessory must be re-paired and every password re-entered, so note them first. Photos, apps and accounts are untouched. Find it in Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset. If Bluetooth behaves afterwards, the fault was a corrupted settings state.

The hardware fork: when the ladder ends at an assessment

Two findings point past software. A Bluetooth toggle greyed out or spinning forever in Settings — the clearest hardware sign there is; restart once to be sure, and if it stays grey or keeps spinning, the wireless hardware is not responding. And nothing discoverable at close range with several known-good accessories after the full ladder, including a reset — especially where failure began right after a drop or liquid. At Apple there is no Bluetooth-specific fee: this damage sits in the $549 “other damage” tier, or the $99 AppleCare+ fee; a battery below 80% capacity is replaced for no extra charge under AppleCare+. Launched in September 2023, the one-year warranty has expired for launch buyers, so any cover today is a running AppleCare+ plan. Apple inspects before confirming the final fee — back up first. A hot or swollen phone is never mailed: stop, do not charge it, get in-person help.

Questions to ask before you approve

  • Did the fault follow the phone across accessories, or just one?
  • Was the pairing cleared on both sides, phone and accessory?
  • Is the Bluetooth switch greyed out, or does it toggle?
  • Did it start after a drop, liquid exposure or an update?
  • What is included in the quote — parts, labour, seals, tax?
  • Will Bluetooth be tested afterwards with an accessory paired?

③ Pros & Cons: Independent Repair vs Apple’s Tier

✓ Reasons for an Assessed Independent Repair

  • Diagnosis first — the ladder may fix it for free
  • Priced as the job diagnosed, not Apple’s $549 catch-all tier
  • Keeps a $799 phone with a single wireless fault
  • Available locally in CA or NV, or by mail-in

× Reasons to Use Apple Instead

  • AppleCare+ active? The same damage is a $99 service fee at Apple
  • Combined damage may make Apple’s tier simpler to compare
  • A defect with a live AppleCare+ plan belongs with Apple
  • Any opening breaks the factory seal, whoever does it

Bluetooth Not Working? Check the Published Prices

Apple publishes no Bluetooth-specific fee — most failures are the accessory, the pairing record or software — so the honest table is the free ladder, Apple’s damage categories, plus the assessed route. Apple inspects before confirming its final fee; tax and shipping may apply.

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs

One accessory, or the phone?

Repairability starts with attribution. A fault that follows one accessory across phones needs no phone repair at all; a fault that follows the phone across accessories, at arm’s length, after a clean re-pair, is worth opening a case for.

Drops and liquid leave marks inside

A hard drop or liquid exposure can damage internal wireless connections while the outside looks presentable. Wireless that failed the day the phone hit pavement, or after it got wet, is a hardware story until a diagnosis proves otherwise.

Document the diagnosis

Ask for the finding in writing: settings, accessory or hardware fault — and which accessories were test-paired afterwards. It protects you from paying for hardware when a corrupted pairing was the whole problem.

These are possible causes, not claims of a model-wide defect. Back up before any repair. If the phone is hot, swollen, or has had liquid exposure or battery damage, say so before arranging mail-in shipment — a hot or swollen phone is assessed in person, never mailed.

⑤ Should You Repair/Replace It?

If the accessory fails with every phone, replace it; if one accessory fails while others work, re-pair it on both sides. Only the bottom rungs — every accessory failing after the full ladder, a greyed-out toggle, or nothing pairing at arm’s length after a reset — are repair decisions: Apple’s $549 tier (about 69% of the $799 launch price) against an assessed independent repair, or Apple’s $99 fee if AppleCare+ is active.

⑦ Accessories We Recommend

Wired USB-C earbuds

They keep calls and music working during diagnosis — no battery, no pairing, no dropouts.

A second Bluetooth accessory you trust

A spare speaker or headset is the best diagnostic tool here: pairing it shows which side owns the fault.

A USB-C cable for wired CarPlay

If your car supports wired CarPlay, a cable separates the car’s Bluetooth from its USB path.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my iPhone 15 connect to my earbuds?

Prove which side owns the fault: pair the earbuds with another phone, and your iPhone with a different accessory. If the earbuds fail everywhere, charge them and follow their maker’s reset steps. If they work elsewhere, forget them in Settings → Bluetooth, clear their record too, and pair fresh.

My earbuds connect but there is no sound. What is wrong?

Often nothing is broken: the audio may be routed elsewhere. During a call or playback, open the audio output selector — a device in another room may be taking the sound, or the accessory may still be connected to a second device. If the route is right, forget and re-pair.

Why do my earbuds keep disconnecting or sound choppy?

Usually range, obstructions, interference or a dying accessory battery. Bluetooth is short-range by design — roughly a room in the open, far less through walls and your own body. Crowded 2.4GHz environments and microwave ovens disrupt it. Test at arm’s length in the open first.

I turned Bluetooth off in Control Centre — why is it still on?

That button does not switch Bluetooth off: it disconnects current accessories until tomorrow, while Bluetooth stays on. For the real toggle, use Settings → Bluetooth, wait ten seconds, and switch it back on.

What does a greyed-out Bluetooth switch mean?

The phone cannot start its Bluetooth hardware. Restart once; if it stays greyed out, treat it as a hardware fault and book a diagnosis. With AppleCare+, Apple’s fee is $99; without cover, a convicted fault sits in the $549 “other damage” tier.

Why won’t my iPhone 15 pair with my car?

Cars hold a limited list of paired phones, and a stale profile blocks fresh pairings. Delete your phone from the car’s menu and the car from your phone, following the car maker’s steps, then pair again. If the car supports wired CarPlay, test by cable: working wired but not wirelessly points at Bluetooth or the pairing.

Will Reset Network Settings delete my stuff?

It deletes network settings only: saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, every Bluetooth pairing, and cellular and VPN/APN settings are erased. Photos, apps and accounts are untouched. Note passwords first, and use it late in the ladder.

How much does it cost to fix Bluetooth on an iPhone 15?

There is no Bluetooth-specific price — most cases are free fixes: the accessory, a pairing record or a setting. If inspection finds wireless hardware damage, Apple prices it in the $549 “other damage” category, or $99 with AppleCare+. FixUpPhone quotes after diagnosis.
