iPhone 15 Camera Not Focusing: Lens Checks & Fixes
An iPhone 15 camera not focusing is rarely one problem: this phone has two rear cameras plus a front camera, and they do not focus the same way. The main camera autofocuses; the ultra wide is fixed-focus by design, so it imitates a fault it does not have. A smudged lens cover, a case edge or a subject that is too close can all look like a broken camera. This guide works the checks lens by lens, then prices a real failure: Apple charges $169 for the rear camera ($99 with AppleCare+); independent repair is quoted after diagnosis.
ϟ Quick Expert Summary
Test lens by lens before you budget. Clean the lens covers, remove the case and any lens protector, then photograph a well-lit subject at 1x, at the 2x crop, at 0.5x and with the front camera, noting which view hunts, pulses or stays soft. Judge the ultra wide at arm’s length and beyond: soft close-ups at 0.5x are expected, not a fault. If the main camera still will not settle in good light, treat it as hardware and compare Apple’s $169 fee with an assessed repair.

✓ A Repair Makes Sense When
- The main camera hunts or stays soft while other views are sharp
- Focus failed straight after a drop or liquid exposure
- Focus frozen at one distance in every app
- Case off, lens clean, restart done — and it is still blurry
× Do Not Pay Yet When
- You have not cleaned the lens or removed the case
- Only 0.5x close-ups look soft — fixed-focus by design
- Only very close subjects blur — step back and retest
- AppleCare+ is active — the same damage is $99 at Apple

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis
Practical diagnosis and repair-cost analysis based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.
Step one: clean first
Start with the lens covers, not the settings. A fingerprint or film of skin oil over the cover scatters light and gives autofocus nothing clean to read, so the camera hunts. Wipe each rear lens and the front camera with a dry microfibre cloth — no liquids, nothing abrasive. Then remove the case, any add-on lens protector and any magnetic mount, and retest bare: a case lip or protector edge in the ultra wide’s 120° field of view imitates a failing camera, and magnets near the camera can disturb the main camera’s stabilisation and autofocus. If focus returns bare, the fault was never the camera. Finally, look through each cover: condensation or debris visible inside the lens will not wipe away — note it for the diagnosis.
Step two: isolate by lens — main camera at 1x
Test in Apple’s Camera app first — it rules out a third-party app fault. In good light, photograph a subject with clear edges 1–2 metres away — a book cover across the room — and tap to focus on it. A healthy main camera snaps to the tap point and holds it. Press and hold for AE/AF Lock to test whether focus can lock and stay locked. If the main camera will not lock there — plain distance, good light — it is no longer technique. Note the pattern: hunting that never settles, focus locked at one distance, or sharp in the centre and soft at the edges.
The 2x view is the same lens
The 2x option is a 12MP crop of the main camera’s sensor, not a second camera, so it shares the main lens and its faults. If 1x focuses and 2x looks soft, suspect light before hardware: a crop uses fewer pixels and magnifies noise, so in poor light a 2x frame is softer than the 1x frame — crop behaviour, not a second fault. Retest in daylight. Soft at both in good light is the main camera; soft at 2x alone after dark is usually no fault.
The ultra wide at 0.5x: the fixed-focus false alarm
The ultra wide has no autofocus — it is fixed-focus by design, set for arm’s length and beyond, and this model has no macro mode. So “the 0.5x camera won’t focus” usually means the subject is a few centimetres away, inside what that design can resolve. Judge it on its own terms — a group, a room, a landscape, in good light. Sharp there means it is fine; soft at every distance, case off and cover clean, is the version worth assessing.
Minimum distance — and the front camera
The main lens has a minimum focus distance too: hold a subject a few centimetres away and the frame stays blurred however often you tap. That is physics, not a fault. Step back until focus locks, then crop or use the 2x view from that distance. Test the front camera the same way: it has autofocus, so it should lock on a face at arm’s length in good light. One that hunts in daylight is a genuine symptom.
False alarms: darkness, flat subjects, shake
Autofocus needs contrast and edges, and low light offers less of both, so some hunting after dark is normal on any phone — add light before convicting hardware, and retest in daylight. A plain wall or clear sky defeats it too: tap on something textured instead. Not all blur is focus, either: brace the phone and retake — if the still version is sharp, focus was never the problem.
Symptom forks
Main-lens hunting or pulsing that never settles in good light — or a lens that visibly shakes or buzzes as it tries — points at the focus or stabilisation mechanism: hardware, not a setting, especially after a drop. Focus frozen at one distance after a fall leans hardware too. Focus that works in the Camera app but not in a third-party app points at that app; soft in every app points back at the camera. Fixed spots or shadows in every frame are a different complaint — contamination or sensor damage, worked through in our camera repair cost guide. A rattling or buzzing from the camera area when the Camera app opens suggests the stabilisation and autofocus mechanism is moving loosely — a sign to have checked, not a certain diagnosis; never shake the phone to test it. Condensation or debris inside a lens that does not clear is hardware too.
The software ladder
Restart the phone. Install any iOS update — updates fix focus bugs. Test the same views in a second app, such as FaceTime. Only late in the ladder, reset all settings (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings): photos and data stay, but Wi-Fi passwords need re-entering. A full restore is last, and only with a backup — it wipes the phone. If the main camera still hunts in good light after all of that, the mechanism remains — stop troubleshooting software. After any opening, the factory IP68 rating cannot honestly be re-certified.
Questions to ask before you approve
- Which view failed — main at 1x, the 2x crop, ultra wide at 0.5x, or front?
- Did you rule out the case and any lens protector first?
- What is included in the quote — parts, labour, seals, tax?
- Will every view be tested afterwards — 1x, 2x, 0.5x and front?
- Could AppleCare+ cover this more cheaply at the $99 fee?
③ Pros & Cons: Independent Repair vs Apple’s Fee
✓ Reasons for an Assessed Independent Repair
- Diagnosis first — your fault may be a case, not a camera
- The failing view is identified before you commit
- Keeps a $799 phone whose only fault is one camera unit
- Available in CA or NV, or by mail-in
× Reasons to Use Apple Instead
- AppleCare+ active? Rear camera damage is a $99 service fee at Apple
- Launched September 2023 — the one-year warranty has expired for launch buyers
- Apple’s $169 fee covers the rear camera as one unit
- Any opening of the phone breaks the factory seal, whoever does it
Camera Still Not Focusing? Check the Published Prices
The rear camera has a published Apple price, so the honest table is Apple’s fees plus the assessed route. Apple inspects before confirming its final fee; tax and shipping may apply. Authorised providers set their own fees.
| Your route | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apple — rear camera repair, no cover | $169 | Apple’s listed out-of-warranty fee — about 21% of the $799 launch price. One rear camera unit price; no per-lens or focus-specific fee exists. |
| Apple — rear camera damage, with AppleCare+ | $99 | The AppleCare+ fee for rear camera damage. If your plan is active, check this route first. |
| Apple — back glass repair | $169 | For cracked glass beside the cameras, which admits dust and moisture. |
| Apple — front camera or wider damage | $549 | No front-camera line exists: that fault is not the $169 repair and falls in this “other damage” tier after inspection. |
| FixUpPhone — camera diagnosis | Quote after diagnosis | No fixed price is published. The failing view is confirmed first; work proceeds only after you approve. |
| DIY fixes | Free checks only | Cleaning, removing accessories and the software steps are the safe home limit. |

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs
One unit, two behaviours
Apple replaces the rear camera as one unit, but the two lenses fail differently: the main camera has a moving focus mechanism that can hunt, pulse or stick, while the fixed-focus ultra wide has nothing to move — softness there is distance, dirt or damage. Tell the repairer which view failed.
Stabilisation shares the mechanism
On the main camera, focus and sensor-shift stabilisation live in the same assembly, so a hard drop can disturb both while the glass stays perfect — the classic pattern is hunting that starts the day the phone fell.
Document the diagnosis
Ask for the finding in writing: which view failed, an accessory or software cause, or a unit replacement. Save an example photo showing the hunting — it protects you from paying for a camera when a protector was the whole story.

⑤ Should You Repair or Replace It?
If a cloth, removing the case or stepping back fixes it, the correct spend was nothing; if a restart, update or settings reset fixes it, you needed software, not parts. Only a camera that stays soft after the checks is a repair decision — and there the rear maths favour repair: $169, about 21% of the $799 launch price, or $99 with AppleCare+. The front camera is the exception: at Apple it sits in the $549 tier — a repair-or-replace conversation.
| Diagnosis | Right move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smudged cover, case or protector interference | Clean and remove — free | The camera was never faulty. |
| Too-close subject, or 0.5x judged up close | Step back; judge at working distance | Minimum distance and fixed focus are design, not damage. |
| Soft in one app only | Update, restart, reset all settings | Focus that works in other apps is software. |
| Rear focus mechanism failed, AppleCare+ active | Apple at the $99 fee | The plan covers rear camera damage at that fee. |
| Rear focus mechanism failed, no cover | Compare Apple’s $169 with an assessed repair | Both price the same unit job — compare quote and warranty. |
| Front camera fault, or camera plus other major damage | Combined written quote | Use the repair-or-replace framework on the total. |

A smudged cover imitates a broken camera. Keep a clean, dry cloth for the lenses only.
A raised lip keeps the lens covers off surfaces and absorbs knocks that disturb focus. Any add-on protector comes off first when photos turn soft.
Not all “blur” is focus — handshake softens photos too. A small tripod separates shake from a genuine fault.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone 15 camera not focusing?
Work from the outside in: a smudged lens cover; a case or protector in the frame; a subject too close to focus on; low light or a subject with no edges; a software hiccup — and only then a failed focus mechanism.
How do I know which camera has the focus problem?
Photograph the same well-lit subject at 1x, 2x, 0.5x, then with the front camera. A fault at 1x and 2x together is the main camera — 2x is a crop of it. Judge the ultra wide at arm’s length and beyond.
Why does the 0.5x ultra wide look soft, especially up close?
Because that lens is fixed-focus by design, with no autofocus: set for normal distances, its close-ups stay soft however often you tap. Use the main camera at 1x or 2x instead.
Why are close-ups blurry even on the main camera?
Every lens has a minimum focus distance, and inside it nothing comes sharp. This model has no macro mode, so step back until focus locks, then crop or use the 2x view.
Can a case or lens protector stop the camera focusing?
Yes — a case lip or protector edge in the ultra wide’s field of view softens that view, and a smudged protector degrades the main camera too. Remove both and retest bare.
Why are my photos only blurry in low light?
Autofocus needs contrast, and darkness offers little — hunting after dark is normal, and the 2x crop looks softer still. Add light and retest in daylight.
How much does it cost to fix an iPhone 15 camera that will not focus?
If diagnosis confirms a failed rear focus mechanism, Apple’s fee is $169 out of warranty, or $99 with AppleCare+ — one unit price, no per-lens fee. A front-camera fault falls in the $549 tier after inspection. FixUpPhone quotes after diagnosis.
Can I mail my iPhone 15 to FixUpPhone for a camera focus repair?
Yes — start a repair request, choose Mail-In Repair, and do not post the phone until the store and instructions are confirmed. You pay inbound shipping; FixUpPhone pays the return. Back up first, say which view fails, and flag any drop, liquid damage or damaged battery — never mail a hot or swollen phone.
