iPhone 15 Black Screen: Causes, Safe Fixes & When to Seek Repair

A black screen on an iPhone 15 does not automatically mean a dead phone or a new display. The phone may be alive behind the dark screen, with only the picture hidden, frozen or failed — or the screen may be fine on a phone with no power. This guide separates the two before money is discussed: establish whether the phone is alive, rule out the display traps, work the safe-fix ladder — charge, force restart, computer Update before Restore — and compare repair routes, starting with Apple’s $279 screen fee.

ϟ Quick Expert Summary

Triage before parts. Find out whether the phone is alive behind the black screen: call it, listen for a ring or vibration, listen for a charging chime on a known-good cable, and try Siri. Alive-but-black points to the display path; silent-and-dead to the power path. Check the two traps first — brightness turned right down, and VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain. Then work the ladder: 30 minutes on a known-good cable and 20W adapter or higher, Apple’s force restart, and a computer Update — never a Restore first. Heat, swelling, a chemical smell or a liquid history means stop and get it assessed in person.

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis

Troubleshooting based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.

First question: is the phone alive behind the screen?

Everything branches from this. Call the phone: does it ring, vibrate, or play notification sounds? Plug it into a known-good cable and listen for the charging chime. Hold the Side button and try Siri. Any sign means the phone is running and the fault sits in the display path: panel, connection, or the software driving it. Complete silence means treat it as a power problem until proven otherwise.

The two display traps, before anything invasive

Two settings can make a working iPhone 15 look black, and both are free to rule out. The first is brightness turned right down: in bright daylight a screen at its lowest setting can read as completely off. Check in a dark room, and if Siri answers, ask Siri to turn brightness up. The second is VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain: when VoiceOver is on, a three-finger triple-tap toggles it, deliberately blacking out the display while the phone keeps working behind it. If the phone talks or rings but shows nothing, try that triple-tap once. If the picture returns, nothing was broken. Note this model has no Always-On display, so there is no dimmed always-on picture to confuse with a fault. One more check: shine a bright torch across the dark screen at a shallow angle. A faint image visible only that way points toward a display-path failure — a check, not proof; diagnosis still decides.

Step one: charge it properly for 30 minutes

A deeply discharged battery can show nothing at first — no logo, no charging symbol, no response to buttons. Connect a known-good USB-C cable and a 20W adapter or higher — a different cable rules out the commonest false alarm — plug into a wall socket, and leave the phone alone for 30 minutes. Apple’s published wired figure is up to 50% in around 30 minutes on that adapter class, so a healthy battery and charging path should show some sign of life within that window. One exception overrides this step: if the phone is hot, swollen or smells chemical, do not charge it at all.

Step two: force a restart with Apple’s sequence

If the screen is still black after charging, force a restart using Apple’s sequence: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button for around 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears, then release. Keep holding through the black screen. A force restart does not erase data; it cuts through a crashed system or a frozen display. If the logo appears, then dies, then appears again in a loop, stop: that pattern points away from a simple freeze.

Step three: the computer test — Update before Restore, always

Still black? Connect the phone to a computer with a known-good cable and open Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on a Windows PC. Recognition is itself a diagnosis: a computer that sees the phone proves it is powered, pushing the fault toward the display. If it connects, take the backup opportunity first. Then choose Update before Restore, always. Update reinstalls the operating system while preserving data. Restore erases the phone, so treat it only as a last resort, after a backup exists or you have explicitly accepted the data loss. If the computer sees nothing, try a second cable and port once; still nothing means hands-on diagnosis.

If it revives: back up first, then protect the fix

Back up first — before anything else — while the phone is working. Then update iOS to the latest version offered, and watch for recurrence: a black screen that returns is a symptom, not bad luck. Check Battery Health under Settings, Battery, Battery Health & Charging; a worn battery can sit behind repeated shutdowns, and with AppleCare+ a battery below 80% health is replaced at no charge.

The cause ladder: what the results actually mean

The ladder separates the realistic causes. A crashed system is the cheapest outcome: the phone revives after a force restart or an Update, and the correct spend was time, not parts. A failed display is next: the phone rings or connects to a computer, the traps are ruled out, and the picture never returns — including a panel that failed internally under an uncracked Ceramic Shield front after a drop, so “the glass looks fine” does not clear the display. A power-path fault fits the silent phone: battery first, board fault after. Only hands-on diagnosis separates these with certainty.

Liquid, heat and the hard safety stop

Context changes the safe answer. If the black screen followed liquid exposure, stop and assess rather than repeatedly charging and restarting: the IP68 rating is a when-new laboratory rating, resistance is not permanent, and liquid damage is never covered by Apple’s warranty. Heat alone can also explain a refusal to start: a phone that shut down hot may stay off until it cools. Leave it unplugged in a cool room — Apple’s operating range is 0° to 35° C — then retry the charge test. The hard safety stop is firmer: a phone that is swollen or smells chemical, or whose screen edge is lifting, is a battery emergency, not a charging problem: it must not be charged, pressed, repeatedly restarted or mailed in — in-person help only.

Questions to ask before you approve

  • Did it show signs of life — ring, vibration, chime, Siri, computer?
  • Were brightness and Screen Curtain ruled out first?
  • Is the diagnosis the display, the battery, or deeper?
  • What does the quote include — parts, labour, seals, tax?
  • Will my data still be on the phone?
  • What warranty covers the part and labour?
  • Any liquid damage or battery swelling?
  • Could AppleCare+ cover this at the $29 screen fee?

③ Pros & Cons: Troubleshooting First vs Going Straight to Repair

✓ Reasons to Work the Safe Fixes First

  • A drained phone costs nothing but 30 minutes on a charger
  • A force restart fixes a frozen display, data intact
  • Signs-of-life checks tell you which repair you need
  • Brightness and Screen Curtain traps are free to rule out

× Reasons to Stop Troubleshooting and Get Help

  • Heat, swelling or a chemical smell means a battery hazard
  • Liquid inside the phone gets worse with time
  • An early Restore can erase data an Update would keep
  • Logo loops and silent computers mean hardware, not settings

Black Screen? Check the Published Prices If Hardware Is the Cause

If the safe fixes point to hardware, these are Apple’s published prices; no post-launch revision was found, so the launch figures are the headline figures. Apple inspects before confirming its final fee; tax and shipping may apply, and authorised providers set their own fees. A launch buyer’s one-year warranty expired in September 2024 — cover today means AppleCare+ or a later purchase date.

If the cause is…Published priceWhat it means
Apple — display replacement$279Apple’s out-of-warranty screen fee — about 35% of the $799 launch price.
Apple — display, with AppleCare+$29The AppleCare+ screen fee. If a plan is active, check this route first.
Apple — battery replacement$99Apple’s battery fee, if the power path is the cause. With AppleCare+, a battery below 80% health is replaced at no charge.
Apple — screen and back glass$399If a drop broke both sides — $58 with AppleCare+. Back glass alone is $169, or $29 with AppleCare+.
Apple — other damage$549 / $99Board-level and unlisted faults: $549, or $99 with AppleCare+. A rear camera fault is $169, or $99 with AppleCare+.

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs

The display is a sealed assembly

The OLED panel, touch layer and Ceramic Shield front are serviced as one display assembly. That is why “the glass is fine” does not rule out a screen replacement: a panel that failed internally is replaced as the same unit. After any opening, a new seal should be fitted, and the factory IP68 rating cannot be re-certified.

Alive vs dead decides the job

A phone that rings needs the display path checked; one with no signs of life needs its power path checked — battery first, at $99 at Apple, before anyone assumes the $549 tier. Get the finding in writing.

Document what you tried

Note what you tried, in order: signs of life, brightness checks, charge time, whether the restart produced a logo, whether a computer recognised it, and what happened just before — drop, liquid, heat or update.

⑤ Should You Repair or Replace It?

Match the move to the diagnosis. If the panel is the cause, a $279 screen is about 35% of the $799 launch price, and the $29 AppleCare+ route comes first if a plan is active. Replacement only enters the conversation when several major faults stack up.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPhone 15 screen black but the phone still rings?

If it rings, vibrates or answers Siri, the fault is in the display path. Rule out brightness and Screen Curtain first; if neither applies, the display needs diagnosis: $279 at Apple, or $29 with AppleCare+.

How do I force restart an iPhone 15 with a black screen?

Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button for around 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. A force restart does not erase data. Charge for at least 30 minutes first if the battery may be deeply drained.

Could the screen just be very dim, or hidden by Screen Curtain?

Yes — both imitate a dead display. Brightness turned right down can look like nothing in bright light, so check in a dark room or ask Siri to turn it up. With VoiceOver on, Screen Curtain deliberately blacks out a working screen: a three-finger triple-tap toggles it.

How long should I charge a black-screen iPhone 15 before trying again?

Give it 30 minutes on a known-good cable and a 20W adapter or higher. The published wired figure is up to 50% in around 30 minutes — so if that window changes nothing, a flat battery alone is unlikely to be the story. Never charge a hot, swollen or chemical-smelling phone.

What is the difference between Update and Restore — and will I lose my data?

Update reinstalls the operating system and preserves your data; Restore erases the phone. Always choose Update first, and back up wherever the phone still connects. Restore is the last software step, only after a backup exists or you have accepted the data loss.

The screen went black after a drop, but the glass is not cracked. Can the display still be broken?

Yes. The Ceramic Shield front protects the surface glass, but the OLED panel underneath can fail internally and go dark without a visible crack. If the back glass broke too, Apple’s combined fee is $399, or $58 with AppleCare+.

How much does it cost to fix an iPhone 15 black screen?

It depends on the cause. A failed display is $279 at Apple, or $29 with AppleCare+. A dead battery is $99, or no charge with AppleCare+ below 80% health. Board faults fall into Apple’s $549 “other damage” tier, or $99 with AppleCare+. FixUpPhone quotes after assessment.

My phone is black-screened and hot — or the screen looks lifted. Can I mail it in?

No — do not mail a hot or swollen phone, do not press the screen, and do not charge it. Those signs can point to a damaged battery, which needs in-person assessment. Otherwise mail-in is available: start a request, wait for the store and instructions to be confirmed, and flag liquid damage, overheating or battery damage.
