iPhone 15 Not Charging: Troubleshooting Checklist & Repair Options
Your iPhone 15 is plugged in — and the battery is going nowhere. Before you price a repair, work this checklist in order, changing one thing at a time: a dead cable, a dead power source, packed lint, a charge setting doing its job, a liquid alert, heat protection. If the checks run out, the last sections map your findings to the right repair route.
ϟ Quick Expert Summary
Work the ladder in order and stop when charging returns. Start with a known-good cable and adapter — a dead cable is the commonest cause — then change the power source, then inspect the port. Run the wireless cross-check at up to 15W: wireless works and wired fails narrows the fault to the cable-or-port path; neither works points at the battery or power path. Rule out the honest false alarms — an 80% limit, a liquid alert, a heat pause — before calling anything hardware.

Use the published figures as your yardstick: with a 20W adapter or higher, wired charging reaches up to 50% in around 30 minutes. Slow transfers are a separate matter — data here is USB 2 by design, and that slower speed does not affect charging.
② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis
A checklist based on Apple’s published specifications, fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s service information. Run the steps in order; each fixes the problem or rules something out.
How to use this ladder
Change one thing at a time, and note what happened. If charging returns, you have found the fault; if not, move on. One safety rule outranks the ladder: a phone that is hot at rest, swollen or damaged is never charged and never mailed — unplug it and have it assessed in person.
Step 1: Known-good cable and adapter
Most “not charging” faults die here, because a dead cable is the commonest cause of all. Swap in a cable and adapter you know work — the pair that charges another device — and change nothing else. A cable can fail while looking perfect: internal breaks trickle, work in one orientation, or cut out when moved. Keep this pair for every later step; up to 50% in around 30 minutes needs a 20W adapter or higher.
Step 2: Change the power source
Keep the known-good pair and change only where the power comes from: a different wall outlet. A laptop port is not a fair test — it can supply little power or sleep mid-charge — and a power strip can be switched off or dead while looking fine. If the phone charges from the second outlet, the source was the fault.
Step 3: Inspect the port — look first, clean safely
Take the case off if you wear one — a thick case can hold the plug a fraction short of seated. Switch the phone off and shine a torch into the USB-C port. Compacted pocket lint is the classic find: it packs behind the connector, stops the plug seating fully, and produces the signature symptom — charging only at an angle, or a cable that sits shallow. Loose lint can be teased out gently with a wooden or plastic pick only. Never use metal, liquids, or compressed air. If lint is packed hard, let a technician clean it under magnification; our iPhone 15 charging port repair cost guide covers the cleaning. Bent or corroded contacts are different: genuine port damage, not debris.
Step 4: The wireless cross-check
Set the phone on a wireless charger — MagSafe at up to 15W, or Qi2 at up to 15W (older Qi manages up to 7.5W). If wireless works but wired fails, the battery and charging system are broadly healthy, and the fault narrows to the cable-or-port path — the cable was ruled out at Step 1, so the port is the suspect. If neither works, stop thinking about the port: the problem points at the battery, the power path or software.
Step 5: The settings false alarms
Three settings make a healthy phone look broken. This generation has Optimised Charging and an 80% Limit option in Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging: optimised charging holds the battery below full until shortly before you usually unplug, and the 80% Limit stops it there outright — a phone that “stops at 80%” may be following its own setting, not failing. Clean Energy Charging (US) can also delay charging, so a delayed start is not automatically a fault.
Step 6: Respect a liquid-detection alert
The liquid alert is the opposite of a false alarm — a real warning. If the phone reports liquid in the port, disconnect the cable and let the port dry completely; never charge a wet phone, and do not use heat to speed drying. iOS offers an emergency override, but it is for emergencies: charging a wet connector corrodes the contacts, and repeated overrides with a wet port damage it. A phone wet weeks ago that now charges intermittently needs a port inspection for corrosion. IP68 is a laboratory rating from when the phone was new; resistance is not permanent, and liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty.
Step 7: Heat honesty
Charging that pauses when the phone is too hot is thermal protection working, not a fault: charging pauses, and resumes when the phone cools. The operating range is 0° to 35° C. Move it out of sun or a hot car, let it cool to room temperature, and retry. Warmth during charging is common; a phone hot at rest is a different signal — see Step 9.
Step 8: Restart and update
Restart the phone and retest with the known-good pair. If it will not restart normally, force restart: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears — it does not erase data. Then install any waiting iOS update: charging is software-managed, and a glitch can block it.
Step 9: Read the hardware signs
Finish with the evidence. A plug that sits loose or wobbles, charging that works only at an angle, or visible corrosion inside the port — especially with a liquid history — point at real port damage, not settings. No charge by any method is the other end of the ladder: read Settings > Battery > Battery Health, because a worn battery can present as “will not charge properly”, with erratic percentages or shutdowns with charge showing. Below 80% capacity, Apple replaces the battery for $99, or at no additional charge with AppleCare+; our iPhone 15 battery replacement cost guide covers that decision. The hard stop: with a swollen battery, never force the phone onto a charger — keep it unplugged and get in-person help. Cover honesty: launch buyers’ one-year warranty expired in September 2024, so cover today means AppleCare+ or a later purchase date.
When the ladder ends at hardware
If every check fails, the suspects are internal — port, battery or charging system. Apple publishes no charging-only or port-only fee: genuine port damage is priced inside its “other damage” tier at $549, or the $99 AppleCare+ fee, while a worn battery is the separate $99 line above. An independent route starts with an assessed diagnosis, not a guessed price. Back up before any repair, and bring your notes: cables tested, the wireless result, any alerts, and the Battery Health figure.
What to note before you book a diagnosis
- The step where charging returned — or that all nine failed
- Cables, adapters and outlets tested
- Whether wireless works when wired does not
- Charge settings, and any liquid alert seen
- Heat at rest, and the Battery Health percentage
③ Pros & Cons: Finishing the Checklist vs Booking Straight Away
✓ Reasons to Finish the Checklist First
- It is free and tonight — no appointment or shipping
- Cables, lint and settings cause many complaints
- The wireless split test narrows any later quote to one path
- Your notes make any later diagnosis faster
× Reasons Not to Stop at the Checklist
- Internal faults — port, battery, system — need instruments
- Repeated liquid alerts or corrosion will not improve
- Heat at rest, swelling or damage are stop signals, not checklist items
- Probing the port with metal can turn a clean into a replacement
Still Not Charging? Check the Published Repair Prices
If the ladder ends at hardware, these are the published Apple figures. Apple inspects before confirming its final fee; tax and shipping may apply, and authorised providers set their own fees. FixUpPhone publishes no fixed price.
| Your route | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apple — battery replacement | $99 | A worn battery. About 12% of the $799 starting price — usually worth it on a sound phone. |
| Apple — battery, with AppleCare+ | $0 | No additional charge when capacity falls below 80% of original. |
| Apple — genuine port damage | $549 | No port-only fee exists; this is Apple’s “other damage” category, about 69% of the starting price. |
| Apple — other damage, with AppleCare+ | $99 | The AppleCare+ service fee for other damage. With an active plan, compare this first. |
| FixUpPhone — charging diagnosis | Quote after diagnosis | The fault is confirmed first, then quoted — a clean, a port repair and a battery are different jobs. |
| The checklist itself | Free | Cables, sources, settings and software cost nothing to check. |

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs
When it is the port
The ladder points at the port when wired charging fails but wireless works, when the plug will not seat, or when charging survives only at one angle — from lint to bent or corroded contacts. Full port costs: our charging port repair cost guide.
When it is the battery
The ladder points at the battery when health reads under 80%, when the phone shuts down with charge showing, or when both routes behave erratically. Apple’s fee is $99, or $0 under AppleCare+.
When it is neither
If the port tests clean, the battery reads healthy, and both routes still fail after a restart and update, the fault is deeper in the charging system — a bench diagnosis separates the possibilities.

⑤ Should You Repair It — and What?
Your ladder result makes this decision. Match the finding, not the fear: most outcomes are an accessory, a clean or a setting. A worn battery at Apple is $99 — about 12% of the $799 starting price — and usually worth it. Genuine port damage through Apple’s tier is $549, about 69%, so an assessed independent quote is the realistic comparison.
| Checklist finding | Right move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cable, adapter or socket at fault | Replace the accessory | The phone was never broken. |
| Lint or debris in the port | Professional clean | A service, not a part — metal probing risks real damage. |
| Charge limit, optimised charging, heat or software | Free fix — monitor it | These pauses are protection, as designed. |
| Port at fault, AppleCare+ active | Apple at the $99 fee | The plan covers other damage at that service fee. |
| Port at fault, no cover | Assessed independent repair | Compare a port-specific quote with Apple’s $549 tier. |
| Battery health under 80% | Battery replacement | $99 at Apple, or $0 under AppleCare+ below 80%. |
Replacing the phone over a charging fault is the last resort: every finding here is fixable for a fraction of its value. Use the repair-or-replace framework only when several faults arrive together.

Keep one certified cable you trust as your Step 1 test standard.
Wireless charging at up to 15W is a backup route and the Step 4 tool: it separates port faults from system faults.
Fast charge — up to 50% in around 30 minutes — assumes a 20W adapter or higher in a wall socket. A low-watt adapter makes a phone look faulty.
⑧ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone 15 not charging at all?
Work the causes in order: cable and adapter, power source, lint, the wireless split, charge settings, a liquid alert, heat, software, or hardware — a worn battery or a damaged port.
It charges wirelessly but not by cable. What does that mean?
The battery and main charging system are probably healthy; the fault is in the cable-or-port path. Confirm with a known-good cable and inspect the port; if wired charging still fails, the port is the suspect.
Neither wired nor wireless charging works. What now?
Think beyond the port: battery, power path or software. Restart, update, check settings and read Battery Health. If both routes still fail, the fault is internal and needs a bench diagnosis.
Why does my iPhone 15 stop charging at 80%?
Usually by design. This generation has Optimised Charging and an 80% Limit option: optimised charging holds the battery below full until shortly before you usually unplug, and the 80% Limit stops it there outright. Clean Energy Charging (US) can also delay charging. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging first.
What does the liquid-detection alert mean, and what should I do?
Moisture in the USB-C connector; the phone blocks wired charging to protect the contacts. Disconnect and let the port dry completely — never charge a wet phone, and do not use heat. The emergency override is for emergencies only: charging a wet connector corrodes it, and repeated overrides damage the port. Returning alerts point to corrosion.
Why is my iPhone 15 charging so slowly?
Usually a low-watt adapter, a hub instead of a wall outlet, heat, or heavy use while charging. Fast charge needs a 20W adapter or higher. Slow transfers are separate: data here is USB 2 up to 480Mb/s by design, and that does not affect charging speed.
How much does it cost if the checklist does not fix it?
At Apple, a worn battery is $99 — free under AppleCare+ below 80% health — while genuine port damage falls in the $549 “other damage” tier, or the $99 AppleCare+ fee. There is no port-only fee. FixUpPhone quotes after diagnosis.
Can I mail my iPhone 15 to FixUpPhone for a charging fault?
Yes — start a request and choose Mail-In Repair; do not post the phone until the store and instructions are confirmed. You pay inbound shipping; FixUpPhone pays the return. Flag liquid damage or overheating first — never mail a swollen or overheating phone.
