iPhone 15 Screen Not Responding: Safe Fixes & Repair Signs
Your iPhone 15 shows a picture but ignores your taps — or the screen is dark and you cannot tell whether the phone is on. Before pricing a repair, settle one question: is the phone itself alive, with screen or touch at fault, or silent to everything? The ladders differ. Work the free steps in order — triage, force restart, bare-screen test, backup and update, computer route — and know the hardware signs that end the ladder. If touch hardware is damaged, Apple prices the screen at $279, or $29 with AppleCare+; FixUpPhone quotes after assessment.
ϟ Quick Expert Summary
Start with the fork. Call the phone: if it rings or vibrates, chimes when plugged in, or responds to the Side button while the screen stays dark or ignores touch, it is alive — the fault is display or touch. Silent to calls, charging and buttons is a power or board story, not a screen route. For an alive phone, work in order: force restart, case and protector off, back up the moment touch works, update iOS, then the computer route. Nothing before Restore erases data.

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis
Practical triage based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and force-restart guidance, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.
Step zero — the alive-versus-dead fork
Do this before any setting. Call the iPhone: does it ring or vibrate? Plug it in: is there a charging chime? Press the Side button: any response — sound, vibration, a flash of picture? Any yes means the phone is alive, with a display or touch fault: work the ladder below. Silent to everything is a different story: power, a deeply flat battery, or board-level damage. If a flat battery is possible, leave it on a known-good cable and adapter for 30 minutes — it fast-charges to around 50% in about 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher — then test again. Naming your fork helps any repairer.
Safety first: the lifting, hot screen
One finding cancels the whole ladder. If the screen is lifting, the phone feels hot, or the body looks pushed up, a swollen battery may be pressing the display from inside. Do not press the screen down, do not keep charging it, and do not mail it — skip every step below and get it assessed in person. Handle cracked glass by the frame; do not keep tapping it. Apple’s operating range is 0° to 35° C (storage −20° to 45° C).
Free step one: force restart — this model’s exact sequence
If the phone is alive but frozen, force restart it. Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. If the power-off slider appears, keep holding through it — do not slide it. This clears most frozen-touch states and loses no data. Afterwards, test touch across the whole screen — corners, edges, keyboard — because what survives, and where, is the result. A stuck volume button blocks the sequence; see the iPhone 15 power button repair cost guide.
Free step two: case and protector off, test bare
Remove the case and peel off the screen protector, then test the bare screen. A lifted, wrongly fitted or wrong-model protector kills edge touch first — corners and swipe zones stop answering while the centre works — and a tight case can press on the display edge. Clean the screen; a wet or greasy screen misreads touches. Touch needs skin contact, so test with clean, dry, bare fingers: thick gloves will not register, and wet hands on a wet screen produce missed and phantom touches. If touch returns on bare, dry glass, fit a correct protector or replace the case.
Free step three: if it responds at all, back up — then update
An intermittently responsive screen is a closing window, so use it in the right order. The moment touch works — even briefly — back up immediately, to iCloud or a computer, before changing anything else. Only then update iOS: an update can clear a software fault that froze touch, and preserves your data. Do not reverse that order — an update without a backup, on a screen that may not answer the prompts that follow, risks leaving you with neither.
Free step four: the computer route, honestly
Connect the phone to a computer — Finder on a Mac, or iTunes on a Windows PC — and choose Update. Update reinstalls the system software, preserves your data, and can fix a system fault that froze touch. Do not choose Restore first: Restore erases the phone — a last resort, only after Update has failed and a backup exists. One honest limit: approving the connection can require tapping a trust prompt, unless the phone was paired with that computer before. If the screen never responds, that prompt cannot be answered and this route may go nowhere.
The honest stop signs for hardware
Stop the ladder and book an assessment when you see any of these. Touch dead in one zone or band while the rest works. Ghost touches — taps, typing or apps opening by themselves. Lines, flicker or discoloration with the failure. Onset with a drop or a crack. And the subtle one: touch dead but the picture perfect after an impact — digitiser-layer damage, the touch-sensing layer failed under glass that still displays flawlessly, so “the screen looks fine” does not clear it. Each describes hardware, not a setting. Liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty.
The money picture: a screen fee, or a wider tier
Once the ladder points to hardware, the tier follows the fork. A display or touch fault on an alive phone is Apple’s screen repair: $279 out of warranty, or $29 with AppleCare+ — about 35% of the $799 launch price. A phone silent to everything, with a deeper power or board finding, falls in Apple’s “other damage” tier at $549, or $99 with AppleCare+. If the same drop cracked the back glass, the combined fee is $399, or $58 with AppleCare+; back glass alone is $169. An independent repair is quoted after assessment — ask any shop quoting a cheap touch-layer-only fix what part is fitted, because Apple does not sell the job that way. Launch buyers’ one-year warranty expired in September 2024, so cover today means AppleCare+ or a later purchase.
Questions to ask before you approve a repair
- Is the phone alive — ringing, chiming, vibrating — or silent to everything?
- Did the fault survive a force restart and a computer Update?
- Is touch dead in one zone or band, or everywhere?
- Exactly what part is being fitted, and what is included?
- Will touch be tested across the full screen afterwards?
- Could AppleCare+ cover this more cheaply at the $29 screen fee?
③ Pros & Cons: Triage First vs Booking Straight Away
✓ Reasons to Work the Free Ladder First
- Frozen software, protectors and wet glass are free to rule out
- No ladder step erases data; Restore is kept out entirely
- The alive-or-dead answer makes any quote accurate
- At $279, Apple’s screen is a considered spend, not a guess
× Reasons Not to Troubleshoot Forever
- Dead zones surviving a restart are hardware
- An intermittent screen is a closing backup window — use it
- AppleCare+ active? The screen fee is $29 at Apple
- A lifting or hot screen is a safety stop, not a test case
Screen Not Responding? Check the Published Prices
These figures matter only once the ladder points to hardware; which row applies follows the fork. Apple’s fees are the launch figures — no post-launch revision was found. Apple inspects before confirming its fee; tax and shipping may apply.
| Your route | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Free triage ladder | Free — your time | Alive-or-dead tests, force restart, bare-screen test, backup and update, computer Update. None erases data. |
| Apple — screen, no cover | $279 | Apple’s screen fee, as one unit — about 35% of the $799 launch price. The anchor for a display or touch fault. |
| Apple — screen, with AppleCare+ | $29 | The AppleCare+ screen fee. If your plan is active, check this first. |
| Apple — screen and back glass | $399 | If the same drop cracked the back glass — $58 with AppleCare+. Back glass alone $169, or $29 with AppleCare+. |
| Apple — deeper damage found | $549 | Power, board or wider damage: Apple’s “other damage” tier, or $99 with AppleCare+. Battery alone $99; rear camera alone $169. |

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs
Dead zones and digitiser damage
A strip, band or corner that stays dead while the rest works is the touch layer reporting local damage, classically after a drop. The picture can look perfect over a dead zone — that is digitiser-layer damage, not reassurance. Software steps do not move a dead zone. Tell the repairer which zone fails, and what started it.
Ghost touch, lines and flicker
Touches that fire by themselves, typing you did not do, or lines, flicker and discoloration with the touch fault all point one way: a damaged display assembly or disturbed connections. Note whether it follows liquid or heat, and stop using the phone for anything sensitive — a phone that taps by itself can open apps on its own.
Your data window
A screen replacement should not touch your data — but treat any unresponsive screen as a data risk. A fully dead screen can block unlocking, the trust prompt a computer needs, and backing up. If touch works even briefly, back up immediately, before booking anything. If it never returns, tell the repairer first.

⑤ Should You Repair or Replace It?
Repair, in almost every version of this fault. If a restart or bare-screen test fixed it, the correct cost was nothing. If touch hardware is damaged on an alive phone, Apple’s $279 fee is about 35% of the $799 launch price — a rational repair — and an assessed quote is the comparison. Replacement enters only when the fork said something wider, with other major faults stacked on top.
| Finding | Right move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Touch returns on bare, dry glass | Refit or replace the protector or case | The phone was never faulty. |
| Frozen once, fine after force restart | Use normally; back up; keep iOS updated | A one-off freeze is a software pattern. |
| Dead zone survives restart and Update | Screen repair — $279 / $29, or assessed quote | The free causes have been excluded. |
| Touch fault plus cracked back glass | Combined quote — Apple $399 / $58 | Judge both panels together. |
| Silent to calls, charging and buttons | Assessment — Apple $549 tier | That fork is not a screen story. |
| Screen lifting or phone hot | In-person assessment now; do not mail it | Possible swollen battery — a safety stop. |
Do not let a working window close unused: back up first, then choose.

Guards the Ceramic Shield front — but fit the right model flush, because a lifting protector can itself kill edge touch.
Most touch-layer damage starts with a corner impact. Cushioned corners and a raised lip protect the touch layer, not just the glass.
Backups and the computer-Update step need a data-reliable cable; this model carries USB 2 data up to 480Mb/s over USB-C.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions
Is my iPhone 15 alive but not responding, or actually off?
Run the three tests: call it for a ring or vibration; plug it in for a charging chime; press the Side button for any response. Any one means it is alive, with a display or touch fault. Silent to all three points at power.
How do I force restart an iPhone 15 with an unresponsive screen?
Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Keep holding through the power-off slider if it shows — do not slide it. A force restart loses no data.
Can a screen protector, case, or gloves stop touch working?
Yes. A lifted or wrong-model protector kills edge touch, and a tight case can press on the display. Touch needs skin contact: thick gloves will not register, and wet hands or a wet screen misread touches. Remove both, clean and dry the screen, and test bare.
My screen works sometimes. What should I do first?
Back up immediately — an intermittently responsive screen is a closing window. Use any good moment to back up to iCloud or a computer, and only then update iOS. Do not update first and hope the screen survives the prompts.
What is the difference between a computer Update and a Restore?
Update reinstalls the system software and preserves your data — try it first, in Finder or iTunes. Restore erases the phone: a last resort, after Update has failed and a backup exists. Update can still need a responsive trust prompt, or a computer the phone was paired with before.
What are the signs the screen hardware is damaged?
Touch dead in one zone or band; ghost touches; lines, flicker or discoloration; onset after a drop or crack; or touch dead while the picture looks perfect after an impact — digitiser-layer damage. Any of these ends the free ladder.
How much does fixing an unresponsive iPhone 15 screen cost?
If touch hardware is damaged, Apple’s screen fee is $279, or $29 with AppleCare+. Back glass cracked too? Combined $399, or $58. Silent to everything, with wider damage found? Apple’s other-damage tier is $549, or $99 with AppleCare+. FixUpPhone quotes after assessment.
Can I mail my iPhone 15 to FixUpPhone, and how long does repair take?
Yes — start a request, choose Mail-In Repair, and do not post the phone until the store and instructions are confirmed. You pay inbound shipping; FixUpPhone pays the return. Never mail a hot phone or one whose screen is lifting. General repair time is 1–7 days, plus shipping, with a 3-month warranty.
