iPhone 15 Pro Max Wi-Fi Not Working: Network Fixes & Diagnostics

When Wi-Fi fails on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, the phone is only sometimes the culprit: the same complaint can come from your router, your provider, a saved setting, or — least often — antenna hardware. This guide works router-first: run the control test, split one network from every network, and only then price a repair.

ϟ Quick Expert Summary

Prove whose fault it is first: does another device work on your network, and does this phone work on a different network? The two answers route everything. Only if the fault follows the phone do you work the ladder: restarts, forget and rejoin, the quiet suspects (Private Wi-Fi Address, a VPN or profile, Wi-Fi Assist), router-side checks, an iOS update, and Reset Network Settings last. A greyed-out Wi-Fi switch skips the ladder. Apple publishes no Wi-Fi fee; hardware prices as “other damage” at $699, or $99 with AppleCare+.

Source-based editorial guidance, not a FixUpPhone price quote, hands-on repair report or technician case history.

✓ A Repair Makes Sense When

  • The Wi-Fi switch is greyed out and cannot be turned on
  • The phone sees no networks anywhere, while other devices connect
  • The failure started right after a drop or liquid exposure
  • Every ladder step, including a network settings reset, has failed

× Do Not Pay Yet When

  • The phone works on other networks — that is your router or line
  • Another device fails on the same network right now
  • A VPN app or installed profile may be rerouting your traffic
  • AppleCare+ is active — the same damage is a $99 Apple service fee

Apple launch announcement

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share wireless circuitry and antenna paths — why both failing together is a diagnostic clue.

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis

Practical diagnosis and repair-cost analysis based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.

Step one: prove phone or network — before touching settings

Run two tests first; their answers route everything. Does another device work on your network? And does this phone work on a different network — a café, a friend’s house, a mobile hotspot? If other devices fail too, the fault is the network or the line, no phone repair fixes it, and the provider may simply be down. If this phone connects elsewhere, its hardware works — the problem is your home setup. Note the pattern (sees no networks, will not join, joins with no internet, drops, or slow) and when it started; a repairer will ask.

Step two: restart properly — router, radios, phone

Restart the router properly: power it off, wait a full 30 seconds, power it on and give it several minutes to come back. If router and broadband unit are separate boxes, restart both in order: both off, broadband unit up first, then the router once it settles. On the phone, turn Wi-Fi off and back on, cycle Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds and off so every radio reconnects, then restart the phone. If it will not restart normally, force restart: quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

Step three: forget the network and rejoin fresh

Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the (i) beside the network → Forget This Network, then rejoin and re-enter the password. That clears the saved profile for that network — a classic cause of join failures and connect-and-drop loops. On public networks, also check for a captive-portal login page stuck half-open: finish or cancel that sign-in in a browser, because a half-completed portal looks exactly like broken Wi-Fi.

Step four: the named suspects

Three things quietly imitate broken Wi-Fi. Private Wi-Fi Address: a rotating address can clash with routers that filter by device, so set it to fixed — or off — for that network as a test. A leftover VPN app, proxy setting or configuration profile from work or school can force, reroute or block traffic while looking like a fault — a genuinely under-diagnosed cause; disable it and retest. Wi-Fi Assist, at the bottom of Cellular settings, silently drops to cellular when Wi-Fi looks weak; turn it off to see true behaviour. Wrong date and time breaks certificates and logins too — set both automatically.

Step five: router-side checks

Still failing only at home? Check for a router firmware update, apply it and restart. Compare bands: 2.4 GHz travels furthest but is slowest; 5 GHz is faster at shorter range; this model supports Wi-Fi 6E, including the 6 GHz band where a router offers it — fastest, shortest-ranged, weakest through walls. Fast beside the router and slow two rooms away is physics, not damage, and a router-side band problem is not a phone fault. In a crowded building, a congested channel causes drops — change the router’s channel setting. An ageing router needing weekly restarts is itself the diagnosis.

Step six: update iOS

Install any pending iOS update, then test again. Wireless fixes arrive in updates, and a failure that began right after an update is a software suspect first.

Step seven: Reset Network Settings — late, with the full warning

Back up first where practical. Only when everything above has failed: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings. Know what it erases first: every saved Wi-Fi network and password, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings — you will need your passwords again to rejoin. It does not touch photos, apps, messages, accounts or personal data. If Wi-Fi still fails on every network after this reset, software and settings have been ruled out.

Hardware: only when it fails on every network

One sign outranks the others: a greyed-out Wi-Fi switch in Settings — the clearest hardware sign of all. Add Wi-Fi failing together with Bluetooth (the radios share circuitry), a failure dated to a drop or liquid exposure, or a phone that connects but drops constantly even at close range after every reset. Antennas at the frame edges can be disturbed by an impact even when the glass survives; if liquid is part of the story, read the water damage guide before booking anything. Its IP68 rating applied when new; resistance is not permanent, and liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty. On cost, be plain: router, settings and software causes cost nothing, and no repairer can fix your router. Apple publishes no Wi-Fi fee, so hardware prices as “other damage” — $699, or $99 with AppleCare+. Apple inspects before confirming the final fee; tax and shipping may apply, and authorised providers set their own fees.

Questions to ask before you approve

  • Did you confirm the fault follows the phone to other networks?
  • What exactly is included in the quote — parts, labour, seals, tax?
  • Will Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both be tested afterwards?
  • What warranty covers the part and labour?
  • Is there any sign of liquid damage or frame damage I should know about?
  • Could AppleCare+ cover this more cheaply at the $99 fee?

③ Pros & Cons: Independent Repair vs Apple’s Tier

✓ Reasons for an Assessed Independent Repair

  • Diagnosis first — the fault may be an antenna connection
  • Priced as the diagnosed job, not Apple’s $699 catch-all tier
  • Keeps a $1,199 phone whose only fault is wireless hardware
  • Available locally in CA or NV, or by mail-in

× Reasons to Use Apple Instead

  • AppleCare+ active? The same damage is a $99 service fee at Apple
  • A genuine defect is worth raising with Apple first, even out of warranty
  • Combined damage may make Apple’s single tier simpler to compare
  • Any opening of the phone breaks the factory seal, whoever does it

Wi-Fi Repair Cost? Check the Published Prices

Apple publishes no Wi-Fi-specific fee, so the honest table is Apple’s damage categories plus the assessed route.

Your routePublished priceWhat it means
Router, settings or software causeFreeA router restart, the ladder above and a reset cost nothing — always finish them before pricing hardware.
Apple — wireless hardware damage, no cover$699Wi-Fi hardware is not a listed repair; it falls into Apple’s “other damage” category — about 58% of the phone’s $1,199 starting price.
Apple — wireless hardware damage, with AppleCare+$99The AppleCare+ service fee for other damage — check this route first if your plan is active.
Apple — defective wireless hardware under warrantyCoveredA defect is handled under warranty terms while cover lasts. Launch buyers’ one-year warranty expired in September 2024 (model launched September 2023); drop and liquid damage are not defects.
FixUpPhone — Wi-Fi diagnosisQuote after assessmentNo fixed price is published: diagnosis confirms whether the fault is an antenna connection, the wireless hardware or the frame, and repair proceeds only after you approve a quote.

For context, Apple’s other published launch fees for this model: screen $379, back glass $199, screen and back glass $499, battery $99, rear camera $249. AppleCare+: screen $29, back glass $29, both $58, battery $0 below 80% health, rear camera $99.

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs

Antennas at the frame edges

The antennas live around the titanium frame edges, so a hard drop can disturb their connections even when the glass survives — symptoms from the day of a drop deserve an antenna check, not another reset.

Drops and liquid change the picture

Liquid exposure is a hardware suspect for antenna faults. The IP68 rating applied when new; resistance is not permanent, and liquid damage is not covered by Apple’s warranty. Tell any repairer about a soaking up front — and see the water damage repair guide for what liquid does to fees.

Document the diagnosis

Ask for the finding in writing: antenna, wireless hardware, frame damage, or a fault elsewhere — and ask for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be tested, since they share circuitry.

These are possible causes, not claims of a model-wide defect. Back up before any repair — by cellular data or computer if Wi-Fi is unavailable. Flag liquid damage, overheating or a damaged battery before shipping, and never mail in a hot or swollen phone.

Wi-Fi Problems With Your iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Tell FixUpPhone what the phone is doing and choose a local store or a mail-in enquiry.

  • Wi-Fi will not turn on, or the switch is greyed out
  • The phone cannot see any networks at all
  • Sees the network but will not join it
  • Connects to Wi-Fi but nothing loads
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both stopped working
  • Signal drops since the phone was dropped

⑤ Should You Repair or Replace It?

Follow the split: network and settings causes are free, so only confirmed hardware is a spending decision. Compare an assessed quote with Apple’s $699 tier on a $1,199 phone — replacement is never the answer to a Wi-Fi fault alone.

⑦ Accessories We Recommend

A mesh Wi-Fi node for the dead spot

If the phone is healthy but one room defeats it, a mesh node fixes the network’s reach. Place it halfway to the weak room.

A case without metal plates over the antennas

Standard cases are fine, but avoid metal backs or plates over the frame edges, where the antennas sit.

A USB-C to Ethernet adapter

A wired adapter on the USB-C port keeps a desk-bound phone connected while its wireless is diagnosed.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone 15 Pro Max connect to Wi-Fi but have no internet?

Usually the network: the router has lost its provider connection. Test another device — if it fails too, restart the router (power off for 30 seconds) and check with your provider. If only the phone is affected, toggle Airplane Mode, restart, then forget and rejoin.

Why is the Wi-Fi switch greyed out on my iPhone 15 Pro Max?

The clearest hardware sign of all: the phone cannot start its wireless hardware — more so if Bluetooth is unavailable too, since the radios share circuitry. If it stays greyed out after a restart, book a diagnosis. At Apple: $699 “other damage”, or $99 with AppleCare+.

Will resetting network settings delete my photos or apps?

No. It forgets saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings. It does not touch photos, apps, messages or accounts — but note your passwords first, to rejoin every network.

Why does Wi-Fi fail at home but work everywhere else?

That pattern clears the phone and indicts the network: distance and walls, band or settings, or an ageing router. Restart the router and test near it — a phone fault would follow you to every network.

Why is Wi-Fi fast beside the router but slow upstairs?

Range and materials: on this Wi-Fi 6E model, 6 GHz is faster but shorter-ranged and weaker through walls than 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. Fast beside the router, slow through two walls is normal — test closer, or on 5 GHz, before suspecting the phone.

Can Private Wi-Fi Address stop a network joining?

It can on networks that filter by device: a rotating private address makes the phone look new, which some routers reject. Setting it fixed, or off, for that network is a legitimate test.

How much does it cost to fix Wi-Fi hardware on an iPhone 15 Pro Max?

There is no published Wi-Fi-specific price — neither Apple nor FixUpPhone lists one. At Apple it falls into the $699 “other damage” category, or $99 with AppleCare+. FixUpPhone quotes after assessment. Router and settings causes cost nothing.

Can I mail my iPhone 15 Pro Max to FixUpPhone for a Wi-Fi repair?

Yes — choose Mail-In Repair, and do not post the phone until the store and instructions are confirmed. You pay inbound shipping; FixUpPhone pays the return. Back up first, test on a second network, and list the steps tried plus any drop or liquid exposure. Never mail a hot or swollen phone.
