iPhone 17 Not Charging: Troubleshooting Checklist & Repair Options
Your iPhone 17 is plugged in — and nothing is happening. Resist the urge to price a repair just yet. “Not charging” is a symptom with a chain of possible causes, most of them outside the phone: a tired cable, an underpowered adapter, a charge-limit setting, or lint packed into the port. This guide works the isolation ladder in order — each step rules one suspect in or out — and maps what survives to the right repair route and price.
ϟ Quick Expert Summary
Diagnose by isolation, one swap at a time. Change the cable, then the adapter, then the outlet — testing after each change, so the step that restores charging names the culprit. Then inspect the port with a torch, and run the decisive test: MagSafe wireless charging. If wireless works but wired does not, the fault sits on the cable-or-port side; if neither works, think battery, circuit or software. A battery stuck at 80–90% is usually a charge limit, not a fault, and a liquid alert means stop, unplug and dry.
Source-based editorial guidance, not a FixUpPhone price quote, hands-on repair report or technician case history.
✓ Run the Ladder First
- Known-good cable, then a 40W+ USB-C adapter, then a wall outlet
- A torch look inside the port before assuming it is broken
- The MagSafe test — it splits port-side from system-side faults
- Battery settings and Battery Health first
× Stop and Get Help When
- The phone is hot, swelling or smells burnt — stop charging it
- A liquid alert keeps returning after the port has dried
- Neither charging route works after a restart and update
- Battery Health is under 80%, or the phone dies with charge showing

Apple technical specifications
Treat the published figures as your yardstick: on a healthy phone with a proper adapter, charging is fast and steady. If yours crawls, stalls or refuses, something in the chain is interrupting it.
② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis
A symptom-level diagnosis ladder based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information. Work the steps in order; each one either restores charging or rules a suspect out.
How the isolation ladder works
The rule is one change at a time. Swap a single component, test, and only then move on — swap everything at once and charging may return without you learning why. Note each result; a technician will ask for it.
Step 1: Swap the cable
Cables are the highest-wear part of the charging chain, and they fail invisibly — one that trickles, works in only one orientation, or drops out when the phone moves has already failed. Replace yours with a cable you know charges another device, and keep it in place throughout. If charging returns, the repair bill was the price of a cable.
Step 2: Swap the adapter
Next, the power brick. Test with a known-good USB-C adapter — for a fair test, a 40W one or higher, because the fast-charge figure (up to 50% in 20 minutes) assumes that. A 5W-era plug or tired multi-port brick can leave a healthy phone sipping power so slowly it looks broken. Rule the adapter out before suspecting the phone.
Step 3: Swap the outlet
Plug the known-good adapter straight into a wall socket. Hubs, power strips, car sockets and laptop ports deliver less power, less consistently, and some cut power entirely when they sleep. A phone that “won’t charge” at a desk but charges in the kitchen was never faulty.
Step 4: Inspect the port — torch first
Switch the phone off, unplug everything, and shine a torch into the USB-C port. Look for compacted pocket lint behind the connector — it stops the plug seating fully and causes the classic “charges only at an angle” symptom. Loose fibres at the mouth of the port can be teased out gently with a wooden toothpick or a plastic pick, phone off and unplugged. Never use metal or liquids, and never dig: the contacts are fragile, and forcing compacted lint turns a free clean into a port repair. Packed debris, or bent or corroded pins, means a professional inspection — covered in our charging port repair cost guide.
Step 5: The MagSafe isolation test
Now the step that splits the problem in half. Set the phone on a MagSafe or Qi2 charger — this model charges wirelessly at up to 25W. If wireless works but wired does not, the battery and charging system are broadly healthy and the fault sits on the cable-or-port side: re-check steps 1–4, then suspect the port. If neither works, think battery, circuit or software.
Step 6: Respect the liquid-detection alert
If the phone shows a liquid-detection alert, it has found moisture in the connector and is blocking wired charging to protect the contacts. Unplug, leave the connector facing down, and let it dry at room temperature — hours, not minutes. Do not keep overriding the alert, apply heat, or use rice: repeated attempts against a wet connector are how pins corrode. Wireless charging may still work while you wait. An alert returning after a full day of drying means a corrosion inspection.
Step 7: Check the charge limits before blaming hardware
An iPhone that stops at the same 80–90% every night is usually obeying orders. A charge limit set under Settings > Battery caps charging at the level chosen, and Optimised Charging holds the battery below full until shortly before you normally unplug. Both are protection features, not faults.
Step 8: Read Battery Health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. A worn battery can charge erratically or shut the phone down with charge still showing. The threshold is 80%: below it, Apple replaces the battery free under AppleCare+; out of warranty, the fee is $99. Our battery replacement cost guide covers when a swap is worth it.
Step 9: Restart, then update
Finish with software. Restart the phone — a restart clears stuck processes, including charging management tied in a knot — then reconnect. If an iOS update is waiting, install it on the charge you have or wirelessly, then retest: charging is software-managed, and charging bugs are fixed in routine updates.
When the ladder points to hardware
If all nine steps produce no wired charging — especially if wireless fails too — the remaining suspects are internal: the port assembly, the battery or the charging circuit. None can be separated from outside the phone. Diagnosis replaces troubleshooting here. Bring your ladder notes: what you swapped, the MagSafe result, any alerts, the Battery Health percentage.
What to note before you book a diagnosis
- The step where charging returned — or that all nine failed
- Which cable, adapter and outlet you tested, and on what other device
- Whether MagSafe charging works when wired does not
- Any liquid-detection alert, and when you last saw it
- A battery that stops at the same percentage — and your charge-limit setting
- The Battery Health percentage from Settings
③ Pros & Cons: Working the Ladder vs Booking Straight Away
✓ Reasons to Work the Ladder First
- It is free and it is tonight — no appointment, no shipping
- Accessories and settings cause a large share of charging complaints
- Each result rules something out, narrowing any later quote
- The MagSafe test alone halves the suspect list
× Reasons Not to Stop at the Ladder
- Internal faults — port, battery, charging circuit — need instruments
- Corrosion behind a liquid alert will not improve with waiting
- Heat, swelling or a chemical smell are stop signals, not steps
- Forcing a charge past a liquid alert can create the damage
Still Not Charging? Check the Published Repair Prices
If the ladder ends at hardware, these are the published figures for the routes that follow. Apple inspects the device before confirming its final fee; tax may be added and shipping may apply. Apple publishes no port-only fee for this model — port damage falls into its “other damage” tier. FixUpPhone publishes no fixed price either: charging work is quoted after diagnosis.
| Your route | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apple — battery replacement | $99 | The route when Step 8 shows a worn battery. About 12% of the $799 starting price — the cheapest hardware fix here. |
| Apple — battery, with AppleCare+ | $0 | No additional charge when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity and the plan is active. |
| Apple — port or other internal damage | $599 | There is no port-only fee: port damage is priced in Apple’s “other damage” category — about 75% of the starting price. |
| Apple — other damage, with AppleCare+ | $99 | The AppleCare+ service fee for other accidental damage. With an active plan, compare this route first. |
| FixUpPhone — charging diagnosis | Quote after diagnosis | The fault is confirmed first, then quoted — a clean, a port repair and a battery are different jobs. |
| The ladder itself | Free | Cables, adapters, sockets, settings and software cost nothing to check. Never pay for a repair a step here would have prevented. |

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs
When it is the port
The ladder points at the port when known-good wired charging fails but MagSafe works, when the plug will not seat or hold, or when charging survives only at one angle. Causes run from compacted lint to corroded pins. Full diagnosis is in our charging port repair guide.
When it is the battery
The ladder points at the battery when Battery Health reads under 80%, when the phone shuts down with charge still showing, or when every route behaves erratically. Apple’s fee is $99, or $0 under AppleCare+ below 80% health.
When it is neither
If the port tests clean, the battery reads healthy, settings are clear, and both routes still fail after a restart and an update, the fault sits deeper in the charging circuit — unconfirmable from outside the phone. A bench diagnosis separates port, battery and board before anyone quotes a part.

These are possible causes and service considerations, not claims of a model-wide defect. Back up before any repair. If the phone shows a liquid-detection alert, let the port dry and do not charge by cable until it clears — never force a charge against the alert. If the phone is hot, swollen or smells chemical, stop charging it and have it assessed; mention liquid exposure, heat or battery damage before arranging mail-in shipment.

⑤ Should You Repair It — and What?
Your ladder result makes this decision for you. Match the finding, not the fear: the two hardware routes differ enormously in price. A battery at Apple is $99 — about 12% of this phone’s $799 starting price. A port priced through Apple’s “other damage” tier is $599, about 75% — why an assessed independent quote matters for port faults.
| Ladder finding | Right move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cable, adapter or outlet at fault | Replace the accessory | The phone was never broken. |
| Charge limit, liquid alert or software | Free fix — monitor it | The phone protecting itself, as designed. |
| Port at fault, AppleCare+ active | Apple at the $99 fee | The plan covers other damage at that fee. |
| Port at fault, no cover | Assessed independent repair | Compare a port-specific quote with Apple’s $599 tier first. |
| Battery Health under 80% | Battery replacement | $99 at Apple, or $0 under AppleCare+ below 80% health. |
| Several faults together | Combined written quote | Use the repair-or-replace framework on the total. |
Replacing the phone does not enter this conversation on a charging fault alone: every realistic finding on the ladder is fixable for a fraction of its value.

Step 1 only works if you own a cable you trust. A certified cable rated for this phone’s power becomes your test standard.
Wireless charging at up to 25W is both a backup power route and the tool behind Step 5: it separates port faults from battery faults in one test.
The fast-charge figures assume a 40W adapter or higher, straight into the wall. A low-watt brick makes a healthy phone look faulty.

⑧ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone 17 not charging at all?
Work the causes in order: failed cable, weak adapter, low-power outlet, lint in the port, moisture in the connector, a charge limit, software, or a worn battery. The ladder tests each — the step where charging returns names the fault.
It charges on MagSafe but not by cable. What does that mean?
The battery and charging system are probably healthy; the fault is on the cable-or-port side. Confirm with a known-good cable, inspect the port with a torch, and if wired charging still fails, the port is the suspect — our port guide covers the diagnosis and costs.
Why does my iPhone 17 stop charging at 80% or 90%?
Usually because it is set to. A charge limit under Settings > Battery stops charging at the level chosen, and Optimised Charging holds the battery below full until shortly before you normally unplug. Both are protection features, not faults.
What does the liquid-detection alert mean — and can I override it?
The phone has detected moisture in the USB-C connector and blocks wired charging to protect the contacts. Unplug and let the port dry at room temperature, connector down, for hours. Do not keep overriding the alert, apply heat or use rice: forcing charges against a wet connector corrodes the pins. Wireless charging may still work.
Is it safe to clean the charging port myself?
Looking is always safe: phone off, unplugged, torch in hand. Loose fibres at the mouth of the port can be teased out gently with a wooden toothpick or plastic pick. Never use metal or liquids, and never dig at compacted debris — that is how a free clean becomes a port replacement.
Why is my iPhone 17 charging so slowly?
Usually a low-watt adapter, a hub instead of a wall socket, heat, or heavy use while charging. The published fast-charge speed — up to 50% in 20 minutes — needs a 40W adapter or higher in the wall.
How much does it cost if the ladder does not fix it?
At Apple, a battery is $99 — or $0 under AppleCare+ below 80% health — while port damage falls in the $599 “other damage” tier, or the $99 AppleCare+ fee. There is no port-only Apple fee. FixUpPhone quotes after diagnosis.
Can I mail my iPhone 17 to FixUpPhone for a charging fault?
Yes — start a repair request, choose Mail-In Repair, and do not post the phone until the store and instructions are confirmed. You pay inbound shipping; FixUpPhone pays the return. Include your ladder notes.
