iPhone 13 Black Screen: Causes, Safe Fixes & When to Seek Repair
A black screen on an iPhone 13 does not automatically mean a dead phone. The phone may be alive behind the dark screen — ringing, vibrating, answering Siri — or the screen may be fine on a phone with no power. This model has its own false alarms: a battery drained too deeply to show anything, a display too dim to read in bright sun, and a VoiceOver setting that deliberately blanks a working screen. This guide works through signs of life, the false alarms and the safe-fix ladder — charge, force restart, computer Update before Restore — then repair routes and prices.
ϟ Quick Expert Summary
Triage before parts: is the phone alive behind the black screen? Call it, flip the Ring/Silent switch for the vibration, try Siri, and plug in a known-good Lightning cable for the charging sound. Rule out this model’s false alarms — a deeply drained battery, brightness at its floor in bright sun, and VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain. Then work the ladder: charge-and-wait — up to an hour if the battery was deeply drained — a force restart, and a computer Update — never a Restore first. Heat, swelling, a lifting screen, or a black screen after a drop or liquid means stop — get it assessed.

② FixUpPhone Expert Analysis
Practical troubleshooting based on Apple’s published specifications, service fees and coverage terms, plus FixUpPhone’s published service information.
First question: is the phone alive behind the screen?
Everything branches from this. Call it from another phone: does it ring or vibrate? Flip the Ring/Silent switch and feel for the buzz. Hold the Side button and try talking to Siri. Plug in a known-good Lightning cable and listen for the charging sound or feel the short vibration. Any of these signs means the phone is running and the fault is in the display path. Nothing at all means a power problem — start with the charging step below.
The false alarms: dead-flat battery, dim screen, Screen Curtain
Three situations imitate a dead phone on this model. First, a deeply drained battery can show nothing at all — no logo, no charging symbol — until it has taken on charge. Second, brightness: this display is rated at 800 nits, and at its lowest setting in bright sunlight the picture can be almost impossible to see — step into shade before concluding anything. Third, VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain: with VoiceOver on, a three-finger triple-tap deliberately blanks a working screen; repeat it to toggle it off. Finally, two dark-room checks: look for a faint backlight glow at the screen’s edges in a dark room, and shine a torch at the dark screen at a shallow angle. A faint, ghost-like image means a picture is being produced but not lit properly: a display failure, not a dead phone.
Step one: charge-and-wait — up to an hour if it was deeply drained
Connect a known-good Lightning cable and adapter, plug into a wall socket, disconnect accessories, and leave it. Give it at least 30 minutes; a battery drained completely flat can need up to an hour on charge before the screen shows anything. The published wired figure is up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher, so a healthy battery should show signs of life well within that window. A failed cable is the most common false alarm here — swap it before concluding anything. No response after a full hour, on equipment that charges another phone, is a genuine finding.
Step two: force a restart with Apple’s sequence
If the screen is still black after charging, force a restart using Apple’s sequence for this model: quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button — keep holding — until the startup logo appears, then release. A force restart does not erase data. If the logo appears and dies repeatedly, stop — that loop is a hardware conversation.
Step three: the computer route — Update before Restore, always
Still black? Connect the phone to a computer with a known-good cable. If the computer recognises it — in Finder, iTunes or the Apple Devices app — back up first if it connects. Then choose Update before Restore, always: Update reinstalls the operating system while preserving your data; Restore erases the phone — a last step, after a backup exists. If the computer sees nothing, try a second known-good cable and a different port; still nothing means hands-on diagnosis.
The cause map: five causes, priced very differently
The realistic causes now separate. A crashed system is free — force restart or an Update. A flat or failed battery is the cheapest hardware answer: Apple’s battery fee is $89. A display that failed after a drop is a screen replacement: $279 at Apple — and the glass can look perfect while the panel or its display connector was damaged internally; full pricing is in our iPhone 13 screen replacement cost guide. Liquid ingress is covered in our iPhone 13 water damage repair cost guide; IP68 is a laboratory rating and liquid damage is never warranty-covered. A board-level fault is the expensive unknown, priced in Apple’s $479 “other damage” tier.
The drop fork, and when to stop
A black screen that arrived with a drop deserves different handling from one that faded overnight. Impact damage can worsen with heat and charging cycles, so if the screen died in a fall — cracked or not — skip repeated force restarts and get it assessed. Stop and seek repair instead if any of these hold: a crack at the failure site; the phone is hot; the battery is swollen or the screen is lifting; any liquid history; the logo loop; or an unrecognised computer connection. A swollen battery is a hard stop: do not press the lifting screen, do not charge the phone, do not mail it — in-person assessment only. Data is usually intact behind a dead display, and a screen replacement should not touch it — but that is not a guarantee, so back up wherever the phone still connects.
Questions to ask before you approve
- Did it show signs of life — ring, vibration, Siri, computer?
- Is the diagnosis the display, the battery, or deeper?
- What is included in the quote — parts, labour, seals, tax?
- Will my data still be on the phone afterwards?
- What warranty covers the part and labour?
- Any sign of liquid damage or battery swelling?
- Could AppleCare+ cover this at the $29 screen fee?
③ Pros & Cons: Troubleshooting First vs Going Straight to Repair
✓ Reasons to Work the Safe Fixes First
- A drained phone costs nothing but 30 minutes charging
- A force restart fixes a frozen display, data untouched
- Signs-of-life checks tell you which repair you need
- The Screen Curtain and dim-screen traps are free to rule out
× Reasons to Stop Troubleshooting and Get Help
- Heat, swelling or a lifting screen means a possible battery hazard
- Liquid inside the phone gets worse with time, not better
- A Restore tried too early can erase data an Update would keep
- Logo loops and silent computers mean hardware, not settings
Black Screen? Check the Published Prices If Hardware Is the Cause
If the safe fixes point to hardware, these are Apple’s published prices for this model. Apple inspects before confirming its final fee; tax and shipping may apply, and authorised providers set their own fees. The battery figure deserves a note: it was $69 at launch; Apple raised this generation’s battery fee by $20 in March 2023 — $89 is current. A launch buyer’s one-year warranty expired in September 2022 — cover today means AppleCare+ or a later purchase date. Liquid damage was never covered.
| If the cause is… | Published price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Apple — display replacement | $279 | Apple’s out-of-warranty screen fee — about 35% of the phone’s $799 starting price. |
| Apple — display, with AppleCare+ | $29 | The AppleCare+ fee for screen damage. If your plan is active, check this route first. |
| Apple — battery replacement | $89 | Apple’s current battery fee. With AppleCare+, a battery below 80% health is replaced at no charge. |
| Apple — other damage | $479 / $99 | Board-level and other unlisted faults fall into Apple’s “other damage” tier: $479, or $99 with AppleCare+. |
| FixUpPhone — diagnosis and repair | Quote after assessment | No fixed price is published. The cause is confirmed first; work proceeds after you approve the quote. |

④ Repairability & Common Repair Needs
The display is a sealed assembly
The OLED panel, touch layer and Ceramic Shield front are serviced as one display assembly. That is why “the glass is fine” does not rule out a screen replacement: a panel that failed internally is replaced as one unit. After any opening, a new seal should be fitted, and the factory IP68 rating cannot be re-certified.
Alive vs dead decides the job
A phone that rings with a black screen needs the display path checked; one with no signs of life needs its power path checked — battery first, at $89 at Apple, before anyone assumes the $479 tier. Get the finding in writing.
Document what you tried
Note how long you charged it and with what, the torch result, whether the force restart produced a logo, whether a computer recognised it, and what happened just before — drop, liquid, heat, an update.

⑤ Should You Repair or Replace It?
Match the move to the diagnosis — replacement enters the conversation when major faults stack up.
| Diagnosis | Right move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Deeply drained battery | Charge up to an hour, then force restart | A deeply discharged phone can look dead until it charges. |
| Frozen display or crashed system | Force restart; Update, not Restore, if it persists | Both preserve data. A Restore does not — back up first. |
| Display damaged, AppleCare+ active | Apple at the $29 screen fee | The plan already covers it at that fee. |
| Display damaged, no cover | Compare Apple’s $279 with an assessed quote | About 35% of the phone’s starting price. |
| Dead battery confirmed | Battery replacement — $89 at Apple | The cheapest hardware fix here. |
| Board fault or combined major damage | Combined written quote | Use the repair-or-replace framework on the total. |

Raised lips absorb the flat impacts that can kill an OLED panel even when the glass survives.
A certified Lightning cable removes the most common false alarm here — the “dead phone” that was a failed cable.
Wireless charging at up to 15W doubles as a diagnostic: if it charges wirelessly but not by cable, the fault is in the cable or charging path.
⑧ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone 13 screen black but the phone still rings?
If it rings, vibrates or answers Siri, the phone is alive and the fault is in the display path — a frozen display or a failed panel. A replacement display is $279 at Apple, $29 with AppleCare+.
How do I force restart an iPhone 13 with a black screen?
Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the startup logo appears. It does not erase data. Charge first — up to an hour — if the battery is deeply drained.
Could the screen just be dimmed, or hidden by Screen Curtain?
Yes — both imitate a dead display. At its lowest brightness this 800-nit screen can be very hard to see in sunlight, so check it in shade. And with VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain on, a working screen is deliberately black: triple-tap with three fingers to toggle it.
How long should I charge a black-screen iPhone 13 before trying again?
At least 30 minutes on a known-good Lightning cable and adapter — and up to an hour if the battery was completely drained, because a deeply flat battery can show nothing for a stretch. The published figure is up to 50% in around 30 minutes on a 20W adapter or higher — if a full hour changes nothing, a flat battery alone is not the story.
What is the difference between Update and Restore — and will I lose my data?
Update reinstalls the operating system and preserves your data; Restore erases the phone. Choose Update first when a computer sees the phone. If a Restore fails, the cause is hardware.
The screen went black after a drop, but the glass is not cracked. Can the display still be broken?
Yes. The Ceramic Shield front protects the glass, but the OLED panel underneath can fail internally from impact and go dark without a visible crack. If the back glass broke too, Apple prices the panels separately for this model — $279 screen, $169 back glass; there is no combined fee.
How much does it cost to fix an iPhone 13 black screen?
It depends on the cause. A failed display is $279 at Apple, $29 with AppleCare+. A dead battery is $89, or no charge with AppleCare+ below 80% health. Board faults fall into Apple’s $479 “other damage” tier, $99 with AppleCare+. FixUpPhone quotes after assessment.
My phone is black-screened and hot — or the screen looks lifted. Can I mail it in?
No — do not mail a hot or swollen phone, press on the screen, or charge it. Heat, swelling or a lifting screen can point to a damaged battery, which needs in-person assessment. Otherwise mail-in is available once the store and instructions are confirmed.
